Understanding Radon Cancer Diagnosis
What science can—and cannot—show about radon and radon lung cancer diagnosis
Radon increases the long‑term probability of developing lung cancer, but it does not create a distinct “radon‑type” cancer that can be identified in an individual person. Lung cancers caused by different exposures—smoking, air pollution, radon, or sometimes no identifiable exposure—share the same major histologic types and many of the same genetic changes. Because of this, clinicians cannot look at a tumor and determine what caused it.
Scientists establish radon’s role in lung cancer by studying large populations over long periods of time. These studies consistently show that higher long‑term radon exposure is associated with higher lung‑cancer rates. This is how radon’s effect is demonstrated: through statistical patterns across groups, not through the biology of any single tumor.
