1. What Radon Is​
Radon is a naturally occurring gas that forms when uranium in soil and rock breaks down. It moves upward through the ground and can enter homes through small openings in the foundation. 
Because radon has no smell, color, or taste, testing is the only way to know your home’s level.
2. Where Radon Comes From​
Radon comes from the soil beneath and around your home. It isn’t caused by building materials, household products, or anything you do inside the home. Every home has some amount of radon because it’s part of the natural environment.
3. How Radon Enters a Home ​
Radon follows the easiest path into a structure. It can move through:
  • foundation cracks
  • gaps around pipes
  • sump pits
  • construction joints
  • crawlspaces
  • porous concrete
​Once inside, it can accumulate, especially in lower levels.
4. Why Radon Matters
Over many years, breathing elevated radon levels can increase the risk of lung cancer. The risk grows gradually with both the radon level and the length of exposure. Radon is a known contributor to lung cancer risk among people who do not smoke.
​Radon is a long‑term health consideration — not something that requires immediate action. The goal is not to eliminate radon entirely, but to reduce levels so long‑term exposure risk is lower.
5. How Radon Is Measured
​Radon is measured in picocuries per liter (pCi/L).
Testing can be done with:
  • short‑term test kits​
  • long‑term test kits
  • continuous radon monitors (CRMs)
A single test provides a snapshot. If levels are higher than expected, follow‑up testing or professional measurement can help confirm the result at a calm, thoughtful pace.
6. What Level Is Considered Elevated ​
United States national radon guidelines use 4.0 pCi/L as the level at which mitigation is recommended.
This does not mean lower levels are “safe” or higher levels are an emergency. It simply means:
  • at 4.0 pCi/L or higher, mitigation is recommended
  • between 2.0 and 4.0 pCi/L, mitigation may still reduce long‑term exposure
  • below 2.0 pCi/L, levels are generally considered low
​These thresholds are tools to help families make informed decisions — not indicators of immediate danger. You always have time to understand your results and choose the approach that feels right for your home.
7. How Radon Is Reduced ​
Radon mitigation systems use a fan and piping to draw radon from beneath the foundation and vent it safely outside. ​
A well‑designed system:
  • reduces radon levels reliably
  • runs continuously
  • is quiet and energy‑efficient
  • requires minimal maintenance
​After installation, a post‑mitigation test confirms the system is working as intended. This process is straightforward and can be approached without urgency.
8. Why Testing Is the First Step​
Radon levels vary from home to home, even on the same street. Testing is the only way to know your level. Most homes can be successfully mitigated if needed, and many homeowners choose to test every few years or after major renovations. ​
