About Radon and Cancer Causation

Fiction: “Doctors can tell a cancer was caused by radon because of how it looks.”
Fact: Tumors caused by different exposures look the same under a microscope. Radon does not create a unique pattern of small cell, squamous, or adenocarcinoma that lets a doctor identify it as the cause.
Fiction: “Radon cancers have a special mutation pattern or biological fingerprint.”
Fact: Radon leaves no distinct molecular signature. The DNA damage it causes overlaps with smoking, air pollution, and other carcinogens, so no biopsy, scan, or genetic test can show that radon caused an individual person’s cancer.
Fiction: “People on television say they’re certain their cancer was caused by radon, so doctors must know.”
Fact: Personal stories reflect what people believe about their own experience, but they cannot establish medical causation. Radon’s effect only becomes visible in large‑population studies—not in the biology of one tumor.

Likewise, decisions to delay or avoid mitigation without weighing the same factors are not legitimate and can even cross into unethical territory. ​Radon risk is often described by the EPA, radon mitigators, and others using dramatic comparisons that can make the numbers sound scarier than they are. 
​The risk numbers in this tool come from studies of miners who were exposed to radon for many years and later died from lung cancer. Scientists used those results to estimate how many people out of 1,000 might die from lung cancer if they lived in a home with a certain radon level for their whole life. The EPA defines a lifetime as 70 years of breathing the same air in the same house.

​Everyone receives radiation from many sources throughout life -- from the ground, the sky, medical imaging, and the food we eat. Radon is one of the largest contributors for most people, and unlike other sources, it delivers its radiation directly to the lungs.
Each day you and your family members breathe indoor air, a few radon decay particles land in the lungs. Most of the tiny injuries they cause are repaired perfectly. A very small number leave behind microscopic errors. Over many years, those errors can accumulate and increase the chance of lung cancer.
The radiation estimate developed with this tool shows how much radiation each household member receives from the radon level in your house each year. It does not predict lung cancer, but it helps you understand how radon adds to each family members overall radiation exposure over time.
This tool isn’t meant to replace earlier recommendations based on your radon level, your home, and your personal circumstances. Instead, it provides supplemental information that can help you make a radon decision that fits your home, your family, your circumstances, and your priorities.

How to understand your radiation dose

Your radiation dose depends on two things: the radon level in the air and the amount of time you spend in your home. The higher the level and the more time spent breathing that air, the more radiation your lungs receive over time.

Radon gives off tiny bursts of energy that can occasionally damage DNA in the cells lining the lungs. The amount of this damage depends on both the radon level and how much time a person spends breathing that air. Very low levels add very small amounts of risk, while higher levels add more over many years.

How to read this report

Most radon guidance is based on generalized metrics. This report is different. It shows how radon affects each person in your home based on where they spend their time. The doses shown here are estimates, not precise medical measurements, and are intended to be considered together with your Navigator Home Report and other tools.
